What to Expect During Your Consultation
A laser vision correction consultation at Elite Vision Therapy Centre includes a complete eye examination. We will review your ocular and medical history and conduct a full vision assessment, including your overall eye health.
Our team at Elite Vision Therapy is all about the details and strives to determine if you are a good candidate for refractive surgery, that your eyes are well suited for the procedure, and that you have realistic expectations prior to your surgery.
Laser eye surgery is used to correct vision problems such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Once we complete our thorough examination of your eyes, we can determine if a laser vision correction referral is viable.
Exploring Different Types of Laser Eye Surgery
A part of your consultation will be exploring what type of laser eye surgery is the best fit for you. You’ll have various options and our team will work with you to find the best fit for your unique vision situation.
LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis)
LASIK is currently the most commonly performed vision-correcting surgery available today.
During LASIK, your surgeon will create a thin corneal flap that is folded back to reveal the underlying inner layers of the cornea. A laser is then used to reshape the cornea based on your unique prescription. When the procedure is completed, your surgeon will place the flap back in place over the area where the corneal tissue was removed.
LASIK offers a quick recovery time. Your vision should begin stabilizing within 24 hours and becomes even more clear from there. Eye drops can sometimes be used to aid in recovery and prevent dryness.
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy)
PRK predates LASIK and is still a very safe and effective form of laser vision correction. PRK is sometimes recommended for people with existing eye conditions that might prevent them from being candidates for LASIK, like those with thin corneas. Corneal and visual recovery may take longer with PRK.
The PRK process involves removing the outer epithelial layer of the cornea to expose the inner layers, which are reshaped with a laser. PRK generally has a longer recovery time than LASIK as the cornea must heal completely.
A bandage contact lens is usually worn for 2 to 3 days postoperatively to minimize discomfort. Vision also improves slowly with PRK, and you can usually return to normal activities within a week—however, you may not gain peak clarity until a few months following surgery.
LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis)
LASEK is a relatively new form of refractive eye surgery that combines the quick healing benefits of LASIK with the corneal integrity benefits of PRK.
During the procedure, a laser is used to make a very thin plug-shaped flap in the corneal epithelium only, rather than the thicker flap created with LASIK. The plug is gently lifted, and the laser procedure is performed. The epithelial plug is then re-positioned securely over the cornea to heal.
Drawbacks to LASEK can include more discomfort following the procedure and an increased healing time compared to LASIK.
Refractive Lens Exchange
Refractive lens exchange (RLE), also known as clear lens extraction, replaces your eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. This procedure is done by making a small incision in the cornea.
RLE is often associated with cataract surgery and is typically reserved for people over 45 years of age who have presbyopia, require glasses for reading and distance vision, and those with high prescriptions that do not qualify for laser vision correction.
Corneal Cross-Linking
Corneal cross-linking is a procedure used to strengthen the cornea in people with keratoconus.
Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease in which the cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape, causing distorted vision. Corneal cross-linking uses riboflavin and UVA light to surgically treat the cone-shaped cornea.
Corneal cross-linking is used to stabilize a rapidly thinning cornea, halt the change in prescription, and prevent deterioration in vision for those with keratoconus.
