Eye Disease Management

Early diagnosis of eye disease means earlier treatment for our patients. That’s why consistent eye exams are essential, allowing your eye doctor to become familiar with any eye issues that may be developing.

Our approach to eye disease management is designed around the patient experience, and helping our patients through the diagnosis process is a priority.

Please contact us at Elite Vision Therapy Centre if you have any questions or concerns about managing your eye health.

Exploring Common Eye Conditions & Diseases

Eye disease can appear in many forms, and learning about the different forms of eye diseases can help you be prepared and notice the signs.

Cataracts

A cataract is a dense, cloudy area that can form in the naturally clear lens of your eye. This clouding of the natural lens means your vision can become obscured in the affected eye. Cataracts can develop slowly and are more common in older people.

Some common symptoms of cataracts can include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Increased sensitivity to glare
  • Frequent changes to your glasses or contact lens prescription

As cataracts progress, they result in further blurring, increased nighttime glare, and dimming of colours.

When cataracts begin to affect your daily life and prevent you from going about your daily activities, such as reading or driving—surgery may be needed to remove them.

During cataract surgery, the natural clouded lens is removed and replaced with a clear plastic intraocular lens (IOL) to restore clear vision.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that affect the optic nerve and is often caused by high intraocular pressure. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for people over 60, and many forms of glaucoma have no warning signs. The lack of warning signs makes annual eye exams essential.

An increase in eye pressure could be caused by too much fluid being produced in the eye or not enough fluid being drained from the eye. This imbalance of fluid can result in damage to your optic nerve and disturb the transmission of visual information, leading to a potential loss of peripheral vision.

At Elite Vision Therapy, we use different diagnosis methods to help navigate glaucoma:

  • Applanation tonometry is an eye test used to detect changes in your eye pressure before you may be aware of them. This type of tonometry is the most common and has been considered the most accurate for measuring eye pressure.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive condition that affects your central vision when natural aging causes damage to your macula. Untreated macular degeneration blurs your vision and is one of the leading causes of blindness in people over 55.

Macular degeneration comes in 2 main forms:

  • Dry AMD is the most common form of the disease that occurs in 3 stages, early, intermediate, and late. This form of AMD usually progresses slowly over the years. While there is no treatment, lifestyle changes like a healthy diet or increased physical activity can help lower the risk of development.
  • Wet AMD is less common than dry AMD but is an advanced form of macular degeneration. This form occurs when the retina creates new, abnormal blood vessels in the macula. These new blood vessels are weak and may leak blood and fluid, causing the macula to swell. Wet AMD results in rapid vision loss.

AMD prevention and management starts with monitoring risk factors that can increase your chances of developing AMD, which can include:

  • Smoking
  • Family history and genetics
  • Obesity
  • Cardiovascular disease

Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines your eyelid and covers the white part of your eyes. Bacterial and viral infections, along with allergic reactions, can be common causes of conjunctivitis.

Conjunctivitis can be contagious and cause eye pain and severe redness in some cases. Some common symptoms of conjunctivitis can include:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Tearing in the affected eye
  • Eye redness
  • A pus-like discharge

Although pink eye may not affect your vision, you should contact us for urgent care. Experiencing eye pain, blurred vision, and light sensitivity can be good indications to visit your eye doctor for further testing.
