Naturopathic Medicine & Coaching

Approaching Vision & Eye Health Holistically

At Elite Vision Therapy Centre, we believe in approaching vision therapy in a compassionate, personalized, and holistic manner. To help us achieve this goal, we are pleased to offer select naturopathic medicine and coaching services to help support our vision therapy patients.

Naturopathic medicine aims to combine evidence-based therapies with patient education so that patients can live healthy and comfortable lives. Some vision problems can stem from more than just physical issues with the eyes and can be caused or worsened by poor diet or environmental factors.

Naturopathic treatments may include mental health and mindset coaching, acupuncture, nutritional supplements and herbal therapies, or lifestyle and diet counselling.

Nutrition & Vision Go Hand in Hand

Research has shown that adding certain nutrients to your diet (either by consuming foods that are rich in these nutrients or taking supplements) can help preserve your vision, and by extension, improving your quality of life.

The AREDS2 Study

In 2006, the National Eye Institute conducted a comprehensive study (dubbed AREDS2), which found that vitamin C, vitamin E, lutein, zeaxanthin, and zinc can help reduce our chances of developing advanced age-related macular degeneration, and can even help prevent the permanent vision loss associated with this condition.

In addition to the nutrients listed above, research has also found that omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in maintaining the nervous system, fueling cells, and improving immune responses. They are also critical for proper visual development and retinal function.

Positive Results Require a Positive Attitude

Vision problems can be frustrating, and while vision therapy can help, progress takes time and a lot of hard work. As such, it can be challenging to adopt and maintain a positive attitude throughout this process.

Our Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. Laurie Alpert, is here to work with our patients to help them cultivate a positive mental framework so that they can approach their struggles head-on. To hone her techniques, Dr. Alpert has partnered with The Umbrella Project, a mental health initiative that aims to help children and their parents develop the skills they need to reframe their perceptions of challenges and develop positive coping strategies so they can approach vision therapy with the positive attitude necessary for success.

For more information about Dr. Alpert and the services she offers, please visit her website.
