What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye syndrome is a common condition that occurs when your tears cannot provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. This instability of tears leads to inflammation and can damage your eye’s surface.

The symptoms of dry eye syndrome can vary between patients, but some common symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Watery eyes
  • Burning or scratching
  • Eye redness
  • A sensation of having something in your eyes

Dry eye syndrome can be caused by numerous factors, including:

  • Dry environments
  • Dehydration
  • Medications such as antihistamines
  • Systemic diseases such as Sjogren’s syndrome

Managing Dry Eyes

Dry eye syndrome is an ongoing condition, but it can be managed with various treatment methods we offer at Elite Vision Therapy.

Punctal Plugs

Because dry eyes can result from your tears draining from your eyes too quickly, your eye doctor may recommend punctal plugs. These devices are inserted into your tear ducts to help slow down how quickly your tears leave the surface of your eyes.

There are 2 types of punctal plugs

  • Temporary or dissolving: These plugs are usually made out of collagen and naturally dissolve throughout a few days or months. Temporary dissolving punctal plugs are commonly used during laser eye surgery.

Semi-permanent: These types of punctal plugs are more long-term and made out of medical plastics. If needed, they can be removed by your eye doctor.

Tear production is essential to help lubricate your eyes and keep dry eye syndrome at bay.

RESTASIS eye drops are prescription drops that can help treat the underlying cause of chronic dry eye by managing inflammation and increasing your eyes’ ability to produce tears. RESTASIS differs from artificial tears, which are over-the-counter lubricants that provide temporary relief.

Meibomian gland dysfunction is a group of disorders that can alter the tear film composition of your eye and lead to dry eye syndrome.

If the glands are blocked and other treatment methods are ineffective, your eye doctor may recommend meibomian gland expression. For more information on meibomian gland expression and if it’s right for you, please contact us at Elite Vision Therapy Centre.

Lid debridement refers to a treatment method that focuses on removing the accumulated bacterial biofilm from the lid margin to help relieve dry eye symptoms.

This treatment method has yielded significant results and can assist with lessening the effects of dry eye disease.
