Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, is the process of wearing rigid gas permeable contact lenses overnight while you sleep to slowly, gently change the shape of the cornea, reducing the prescription. Ortho-K lenses are typically prescribed for children to slow the progression of myopia. More recently, these lenses have been used by adults to correct low amounts of refractive errors including myopia or hyperopia with or without mild astigmatism.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could correct your vision and reduce your dependence on contacts and glasses, while you sleep?
Ortho-K lenses are worn overnight, gently reshaping the cornea. They are removed in the morning, allowing you to see clearly all day, without having to wear glasses or contact lenses for work, sports or other activities. For best results, it is important to wear your Ortho-K lenses every night or your prescription will regress back to the original power.
Most people with mild to moderate myopia or hyperopia (with or without mild astigmatism) are good candidates for Ortho-K. Since the reshaping of the cornea is temporary, there are very few risks involved and you can choose to stop wearing your Ortho-K lenses at any time and go back to your usual form of vision correction.
Ortho-K is a great option for teens and young adults who want freedom from glasses but are too young for laser vision correction, or for those adults who are not good candidates for refractive surgery because of other health or eye conditions.
Please note that Ortho-K is not yet offered at Elite Vision Centre, please contact our office for updates and more information.
